I woke up the next morning to the smell of coffee and found Merick in the kitchen. âHey.â
âGood morning.â He pushed a travel mug across the breakfast bar. âI found blood leading to the basement. I cleaned it up, but I have questions.â
I hadnât even thought about cleaning the blood up. âUm, thanks, you didnât have to do that.â
âWas it your blood?â
âNo, it was Simonâs he was wounded in an ambush last night.â I sighed. âI didnât think of even looking to see if they tracked blood.â
Merick sipped his coffee. âYouâre going to be late to the office.â
I glanced at my watch. âUgh, I am. Thanks for the coffee.â I grabbed it and headed out to the Hummer.
Merick followed me. âIt had a rough night last night, I see?â
I noted the dents and dings on it, and the fact that the driverâs side door handle looked like someone molded their handprint into it. âYeah, seatbeltâs busted too, but at least itâs in one piece.â
Merick snorted. âLetâs get going.â
âYou donât have to go with me.â
âYes, I do. Iâm in charge of daytime guards, and after last night and what happened with the press conference, Iâm not taking chances.â
I wasnât sure what to say. âOkay, fine.â Is what came out of my mouth. I climbed into the Hummer and made a mental note to see what the body shop would want to repair it. I didnât want to drive without a seatbelt for too long, and I didnât want Levi to see the damage when I returned the Hummer.
Merick climbed into the passenger side. âAre you okay after last night?â
âJust a little banged up physically.â I shrugged. The pack doctor was nice enough to stich me back up. âMentally, Iâm worried I might have caused a huge rift in an alliance and I might not be seeing Simon again.â Even if he lived.
Merick didnât ask any questions as I headed toward the PIB office. He sat there in silence, and I wondered if he already knew what happened or if he was just trying to give me space.
My phone rang, and I glanced at the screen. âItâs Travis.â Fuck. I didnât want bad news while driving, but I didnât want it to go to voicemail either.
I answered it with the hands-free system. âAgent Collins speaking.â
âHe made it through the night. I thought you should know.â
âI appreciate you telling me. Iâve been worried about him.â
Travis snarled a little. âSeems heâs worried about you too. He mumbles for you when he wakes up.â
âLet him know Iâm okay. He and I can talk when heâs feeling better.â
Travis said something under his breath. âYouâre not allowed on pack lands right now.â
âTrust me, I have no intention of going up there unless there're problems that trip my magic.â
âLater.â He hung up on me and I sighed, tightening my grip on the steering wheel as I drove.
âTravis is upset with you.â Merick looked at me. âI should have stayed last night.â
I shook my head. âHeâs upset with how the fight turned out.
